How to combine portrait and landscape PDFs

A wide page can belong in a mostly vertical document. Decide what needs changing before you merge the files.

Portrait and landscape paper sheets arranged into one document with coral page markers

You can combine portrait and landscape PDF files into one document. First check whether the wide pages should stay wide or need correcting. Then arrange the files, merge them and open the saved result. Combining files and changing their page layout are separate jobs.

PDF Combiner joins existing PDF pages and lets you reorder whole files, according to its store description. It does not provide individual page rearrangement or promise to make every page the same size.

Decide whether a page needs changing

A landscape spreadsheet between two portrait sections is not automatically a mistake. You may need that width to read its columns. Start by opening each PDF and checking the text, rather than judging it by the shape of its thumbnail.

What you see What to check before merging
A wide page with upright text Leave it wide if that is the intended layout.
A page whose text runs sideways Correct the saved page orientation in a suitable editor or the source application.
Upright pages with different dimensions Check whether the recipient requires a uniform paper size.
A wide page that looks smaller in the viewer Compare at a consistent zoom level before assuming the content shrank.

If you correct a page, save a separate copy and reopen it. Make sure the correction exists in the saved file, rather than only in your current viewing position.

If every page must use one paper size, export the source documents with that setting or use a tool that changes page dimensions. PDF24's page-size documentation describes that separate operation. Inspect the resulting copies for small text or clipped content before adding them to a merge.

Arrange the files around the wide section

Write down the reading order before adding files. As an illustrative example, suppose a packet contains a two-page portrait introduction, a one-page landscape table and a two-page portrait appendix. The expected result has five pages, with the table on page 3.

Use the plan to check the page count and the table's position after combining.

Keep the table as a separate PDF if it needs to sit between those sections. If it is already inside a longer file in the wrong place, prepare that file in a page editor first. Moving a whole file cannot change the order of the pages inside it.

Combine the prepared PDFs in Chrome

The PDF Combiner overview describes the local-file workflow:

  1. Open the extension and add the PDF copies from your computer.
  2. Drag the whole files into the planned reading order.
  3. Select Combine.
  4. Open the downloaded PDF and compare it with the source documents.

Use the prepared copies when you made orientation or size corrections. Give corrected copies distinct names, and add only the versions you plan to use.

Check layout separately from order

Inspect the first and last page of every section. In the example packet, look closely at the transition onto page 3 and the transition back to portrait on page 4.

Read the edges of the wide table, including its last column. Check that headings and footnotes remain visible. Compare page dimensions if a recipient requested a particular format. A matching page count cannot show whether you picked the wrong version of a source file.

If the output contains a sideways page, compare it with its source. Correct the source copy where necessary, then combine again. For scans, the scan preparation guide covers missing sheets and readability.

Preview the print job before using paper

A mixed-layout PDF and a printer's paper settings need separate checks. Adobe documents mixed-size PDF printing, including selecting the paper source by PDF page size.

Preview the wide pages with your actual printer settings. Check whether the intended paper is available and whether scaling leaves the text readable. A correct on-screen packet can still need different print settings.

For digital delivery, keep the copy you inspected. If the destination also limits file size, follow the single-file upload checklist before sending it.
